String of Pearls

String of Pearls

Bright Indirect
Low Water Frequency
Medium Watering Frequency
Pet Toxic

Light Requirements

Loves bright light. Indoors, give bright indirect with 1-3 hours of gentle direct sun (morning/east window or a few feet back from a south window). Too little light = sparse, stretched beads and weak trails.

Watering Needs

This is a succulent: water deeply, but infrequently. Let the soil dry at least 75-100% of the way between waterings. In bright conditions that’s often every 2-3 weeks (less in winter). Use a pot with drainage and empty saucers-pearls rot fast if kept wet.

Humidity & Temperature

Average home humidity is perfect (no extra needed). Ideal temps 60-85°F (16-29°C). Protect from cold drafts, avoid prolonged temps below 50°F (10°C).

Soil & Fertilizing

Use a gritty, fast-draining mix (cactus/succulent mix + extra perlite or pumice). Feed lightly with a dilute, low-nitrogen fertilizer every 6-8 weeks in spring/summer only. No fertilizer in winter.

Pet Safety

Toxic if ingested (pets/people). Keep out of reach of nibblers.

Fun Fact

Those bead-like leaves reduce surface area to store water and help the plant handle intense sun, a clever desert adaptation.

Native Region

Southwestern Africa (Namibia, surrounding arid regions), where it trails among rocks in bright, dry conditions.
