Light Requirements

Monsteras thrive in bright, indirect light. A little soft morning sun is fine, but avoid long, harsh afternoon rays that can scorch leaves. Low light = slower growth and fewer leaf splits (fenestrations).

Watering Needs

Water when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. Soak thoroughly, then drain completely. Monsteras dislike “wet feet.” In spring/summer you may water weekly, in fall/winter, every 10-14 days is common. Yellowing leaves often signal overwatering.

Humidity & Temperature

They love medium-high humidity (50-70%) but tolerate average homes. Ideal temps 65-85°F (18-29°C). Keep away from cold drafts and heat vents. Brown tips usually mean air too dry or inconsistent watering.

Soil & Fertilizing

Use a chunky, airy aroid mix: potting soil + perlite + orchid bark (and a touch of charcoal if you have it). Feed a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks in spring/summer and taper off in cooler months.

Pet Safety

Toxic if chewed (calcium oxalate). Keep away from pets/children who nibble.

Fun Fact

Those dramatic leaf holes help the plant withstand wind and let light filter to lower leaves in its rainforest home.

Native Region

Tropical Central America (southern Mexico down through Panama), where it climbs trees in the rainforest understory.
