Cuetlaxóchitl Care Guide
(Euphorbia pulcherrima)
(Nahuatl; pronounced kwet-la-sho-shel)
Commonly known as Poinsettia
Light
Bright, indirect light is best. A little gentle morning sun is okay, but avoid harsh afternoon sun (can scorch).
Water
Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Water thoroughly until it drains, then empty the saucer (they hate sitting in water).
If leaves are drooping. Check soil:
- Dry + droopy = needs water.
- Wet + droopy/yellowing = too much water
Temperature + Humidity
Ideal: 65-75°F. Keep away from drafts, heaters, and cold windows (they’re sensitive). Normal home humidity is fine.
Pet Safety
Mildly toxic if chewed (sap can irritate mouth + stomach). Keep away from pets/kids.
Common Issues
- Yellow leaves + drop: overwatering or cold drafts
- Leaf drop after bringing home: stress from temp/light change (give it a week in a stable spot)
- Wilting while soil is wet: roots staying soggy (improve drainage)
Bonus: How to rebloom next year
- After blooms fade, keep it in bright light, water normally.
- In fall, it needs long nights (14+ hours of darkness) for ~8-10 weeks to color up again.
